Who is Hanuman?

Lord Hanuman / Bajrang Bali / Vanar devta is an incarnation of the Supreme Lord Shiva. Shiva took the avatar of Hanuman to serve Lord Ram (Vishnu avatar) and help Sri Ram in his war against Ravana, the demon (rakshasa) & great king of Lanka.

Hanuman was born on the Anjaneri mountain to father Kesari (an ape like humanoid) and mother Anajana (an Apsara – celestial born on earth due to a curse). Kesari was a chief of the tribe.

Why Hanuman is called Pawan putra / Vayu putra?

Pawan / Vayu in Sanskrit means Wind, Putra means son. Hanuman is referred to as son of Wind God (Celestial father). In a legend it says that Wind God had given the sacred pudding (payasam) to Anjana when she was praying Shiva for a child. Hanuman was born to her as a result of this sacred pudding.

Hanuman Chalisa praises the qualities of Sri Hanuman and the various great achievements during Ramayana.

Hanuman Jayanti is not a national holiday in India but is a public holiday in some states like Maharashtra, Odisha, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.. So all the banks, schools and most businesses are also closed only in these states.
