Truth or Myth

Most of the people believes that sky or stars can’t predict what’s happening in our lives. But looking back to the history, we can see farmers used skies as a calendar for understanding their harvest cycles. They cultivated and harvested their crops by analysing the solar and lunar cycles. Ancient Egyptians discovered that the rising of Sirius, The Dog Star, marked the imminent annual flooding of the Nile. The nobles and scholars used sky as a compass and followed the stars to know where to go. So it’s obvious that we can understand a lot about the characteristics of a person by analysing his/her zodiac signs.

Origin of Zodiac Signs

We have to understand when and where these zodiac signs originated or come from. It’s believed that the zodiac signs as we know today were set down during the Ancient Greek period. They named the signs after constellations and matched with the dates based on the the apparent relationship between their placement in the sky and sun. The Babylonians had already divided them into 12 equal signs way before that and the names were The Great Twins, The Scales, The Lion etc.. and later these were incorporated into the Greek divination. The book ‘Tetrabiblos’ written by Ptolemy gave wide acceptance and recognition to these signs.

Elements & Zodiac Signs

The twelve zodiac signs can be further divided into four categories as Fire, Air, Earth and Water Signs. Fire signs are naturally compatible with air signs whereas earth signs shows natural compatibility towards water signs. Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are the fire signs. Gemini, Libra, Aquarius are the air signs. Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn are the earth signs. Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces are the water signs. Also according to the zodiac sign’s elements, they come under different seasons. The air, fire, earth and water signs fall under the spring, summer, autumn and winter seasons respectively.

Zodiac Signs in Changing Times

Now, the major concern of the people that has to be addressed is about the possibility of overlapping of zodiac signs. We all know that the sky today is completely different to how it was 3000 years ago when Babylonians first invented the twelve signs of zodiac. As the earth wobbles, the dates will continue to change, as they always have. The first day of spring was in aries during the ancient times. Due to procession, it’s been moved to pisces. It will eventually return to Aries over the course of 25,800 years. So we can come to a conclusion that most of the things are true about zodiac signs but there maybe exceptions. As we know, Astrology is looking for signs based on the movement of celestial bodies whereas Astronomy is the scientific study of those objects. By analysing the zodiac signs, we can almost understand what the seasons might have in store for us.
